About the Role: 

Reporting to the Director of Employee Labour Relations, the Human Resources Generalist is responsible for providing support and guidance for both non-union and union employee groups.  They will work with all stakeholders including the Human Resources team, management and union representatives to foster a positive, and productive labour relations climate.  The Human Resources Generalist will work closely with the regional HR Business Managers to advice on collective agreement interpretation and application. They will be involved in labour management meetings, collective bargaining and grievance resolutions. The Human Resources Generalist will play a key role in performance management for staff, including progressive performance improvement, and attendance management.   This position will work to ensure that legislated requirements are met.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

General:

  • Through actions, supports the Mission, Vision, Values, Principles and Policies and Procedures of Kerry’s Place
  • Reviews and adheres to all Policies and Procedures, including: Finance & Administration; Services & Supports; Human Resources; Health & Safety, and all other
  • Ensures appropriate confidentiality is maintained for individuals and employees
  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with partner agencies, legal advisors, government employees and community contacts
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources and employment law
  • In conjunction with the Human Resources Employee Labour Relations department, provide timely and accurate advice to managers and employees regarding employee related queries

Employee and Labour Relations

  • Interpret and ensure proper implementation of collective agreements & employment legislation
  • Attends Labour Management Meetings, providing input as needed and maintaining the records and minutes of discussion.  Follows up on action items resulting from the meeting and ensures communication, if needed, of any agreed upon items
  • Attends and provides guidance for Managers on grievances at the first step, or as directed
  • Responsible for a variety of activities related to, leading up to, during, and following the collective bargaining process. This will include conducting research, information and data gathering and analysis, assistance with draft proposals, minute taking and Collective agreement revision upon successful ratification
  • Ensures employee labour relations documents are stored properly and employee files are updated appropriately

Generalist Support

  • Participates in investigation of problems such as working conditions, workplace violence and harassment claims, and progressive performance improvement actions
  • Participates in the Early and Safe Return to work planning and accommodation process as needed
  • Ensures that attendance management policy is being followed and that absenteeism is tracked and addressed as needed by the management group
  • Prepare employee separation notices and related documentation and conduct exit interviews to determine reasons behind separations.
  • Ensures accuracy and completion and timely follow-up of documentation required through legislation and policy and procedures. 
  • Creates custom reports in ADP as needed by the management group for decision making
  • Develops and maintains positive mentoring and advisory relationship with Kerry’s Place managers
  • Supports the implementation of organizational change       
  • Provides back-up for other Human Resource functions, if required
  • Other projects and duties as assigned

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • CHRP designation or equivalent is preferred
  • Completion of Ontario Secondary School (or equivalent) and Human Resources experience complimented by training and/or education in Human Resources

Experience:

  • Three to Five years of experience in Human Resources, preferably in a Generalist role

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written
  • Excellent interpersonal, team building and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong organizational, time management and planning skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Good knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations
  • Competency in using intermediate/advanced features of Microsoft Office Suite and Internet Explorer
  • Demonstrated flexibility, innovation and creativity
  • Excellent problem solving and leadership skills
  • Self-motivated and self-directed
  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision and within prescribed timelines. Self-motivation is required
  • Ability to be flexible and motivated in dealing with a fluctuating and unpredictable workload
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • A valid Driver’s License, with a minimum of G2 and access to a reliable vehicle is required for frequent business travel
