On February 28, 2024, Kerry’s Place Family Advisory Committee (FAC) organized and hosted a 90-minute virtual session tailored for autistic individuals in full-time residential care at Kerry’s Place and their families to discuss and answer questions about finances, taxes, and estate planning. Lise Lareau, co-chair of our Family Advisory Committee says, “It’s a first-ever event of this kind.”
Special guest speakers for Money Talks included:
- Ken Pope, Lawyer and expert in special needs and disabilities issues
- Osman Gelle, Vice President of Supported Living at Kerry’s Place
Topics covered included:
- The Ontario Disability Program and what happens at age 65
- The Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)
- Tax credits
- Passport Program and how it works
Tips on estate planning, the advantages and disadvantages of Henson Trusts, Powers of Attorney, legal guardianship, and ensuring a smooth transition after a parent or substitute decision-maker dies were also discussed.
