Money Talks: A Virtual Session About Autism and Finances

On February 28, 2024, Kerry’s Place Family Advisory Committee (FAC) organized and hosted a 90-minute virtual session tailored for autistic individuals in full-time residential care at Kerry’s Place and their families to discuss and answer questions about finances, taxes, and estate planning. Lise Lareau, co-chair of our Family Advisory Committee says, “It’s a first-ever event of this kind.”

Special guest speakers for Money Talks included:

  1. Ken Pope, Lawyer and expert in special needs and disabilities issues
  2. Osman Gelle, Vice President of Supported Living at Kerry’s Place

Topics covered included:

  • The Ontario Disability Program and what happens at age 65
  • The Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)
  • Tax credits
  • Passport Program and how it works

Tips on estate planning, the advantages and disadvantages of Henson Trusts, Powers of Attorney, legal guardianship, and ensuring a smooth transition after a parent or substitute decision-maker dies were also discussed.

What did attendees think?

“Content was very informative and answered many questions I had. Thank you for organizing this Town Hall.”

“Ken, by and large, did a very good job presenting the many cogent materials covering a wide expanse of financial matters affecting people with disabilities in our care, as well as their family members, including the SDMS”

“Wonderful presentation and well attended. All attendees had the chance to learn and if their questions which were submitted in advance were not answered they were invited to communicate directly later with the presenters.”

“Very informative and very helpful. Well moderated. Thank you.”
