We are pleased to inform families and Substitute Decision-Makers (SDMs) that the federal Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) is now available. Applications opened on June 20, 2025, and eligible individuals may begin receiving payments as early as July.
What is the Canada Disability Benefit?
The CDB is a new monthly income support intended to improve the financial security of low-income adults with disabilities. Eligible individuals could receive up to $200 per month ($2,400 annually). The CDB is not expected to impact the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) or Passport Funding. All eligible individuals will receive a letter from the federal government along with application instructions.
Who is Eligible?
To qualify, individuals must:
- Be aged 18 to 64
- Be approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
- Be a Canadian resident
- Have filed a 2024 income tax return
For Families & SDMs of Supported Persons.
If you are an SDM for a person in Supported Living or Supported Independent Living,
you can apply on their behalf as long as the person:
- Has been approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
- Filed a 2024 tax return
- Meets the eligibility criteria
We encourage all SDMs to:
- Confirm Disability Tax Credit approval
- Submit the 2024 tax return if not already completed
- Gather relevant documents such as:
- Social Insurance Number
- Direct deposit information
- SDM documentation, if required
Application Process
Applications can be completed:
- Online through your My Service Canada Account
- By phone with Service Canada
- In person at a Service Canada location
If approved in July, you may receive a retroactive payment for June.
